| "Modelling the ocean carbon cycle - lessons from the past and entering new territory for the future" |
Abstract
The ocean is the major long-term sink for human-produced CO2 emitted to the atmosphere. The ocean is also major factor in natural glacial-interglacial atmospheric CO2 variations. We employ prognostic ocean carbon cycle models for determining in which way the ocean carbon cycle interacts with climate. In order to exploit the information from the sedimentary paleo-climate record for a calibration and proper design of ocean carbon cycle process representations in models we have developed the method of synthetic sediment cores. An early diagenesis model was coupled with a biogeochemical ocean general circulation model to allow the build-up of time dependent sediment layers under each grid point of the model. An age transport model was developed for each sediment weight fraction in order to allow proper synchronisation of observed sediment cores with the modelled record. The method in principles allows to directly using CaCO3, opal, as well as δ13C data (planktonic, benthic) from sediment core data for the calibration of carbon cycle model parameters such as the CaCO3:POC rain ratio, stoichiometry of carbon and nutrients in particulate matter, and also circulation fields as functions of climatic state variables. Thus there is some hope to optimally estimate the governing model parameters for natural carbon cycle climate feedbacks through systematic combination of models and the paleo-climatic records. This will also be of use for a better quantification of future carbon cycle climate feedbacks. However, there are processes, for which no paleo-analogue is readily available: (1) In the on-going anthropocene quickly new amounts of carbon are emitted to the atmosphere-ocean-land system, while the glacial-interglacial changes were mainly redistributions of carbon within the Earth system. (2) The timing of the anthropogenic CO2 increase is much faster than glacial-interglacial changes. (3) The extent to which carbon will accumulate in the atmosphere and upper ocean is and will be significantly higher than during glacial-interglacial transitions. We have to prepare for this new territory with a broad range of possible scenarios, through inclusion of findings from laboratory and mesocosm experiments in ocean models, through developments of early warning indicators for checking whether potential feedback process in fact are in place, and with high quality observational data syntheses as a basis for adequate modelling. |

| "Aqueous alteration on comets and asteroids" |

ABSTRACT:
The discovery of Ni-, Cu-, and Zn-bearing iron sulfides from comet 81P/Wild 2 represents the strongest evidence, in the Stardust collection, of grains that formed in an aqueous environment. Investigations of sulfide minerals from the Stardust and CI-chondrite collections reveal striking compositional and structural similarities. The Stardust samples include a cubanite grain, a pyrrhotite/pentlandite assemblage, and a pyrrhotite/sphalerite assemblage. Similarly, the CI-chondrite sulfides include individual cubanite and pyrrhotite grains, cubanite/pyrrhotite assemblages, pyrrhotite/pentlandite assemblages, as well as possible sphalerite inclusions within pyrrhotite grains. The cubanite in both collections is the low temperature orthorhombic form, which constrains temperature to below 210°C. The Stardust and Orgueil pyrrhotites are the 4C monoclinic polytype, which is not stable above ~250°C. The combinations of cubanite and pyrrhotite, as well as pyrrhotite and pentlandite signify even lower temperatures, 25°C and 100-135°C, respectively. The crystal structures, compositions, and petrographic relationships of these sulfides constrain formation and alteration conditions. Taken together, these constraints attest to low-temperature hydrothermal processing.
Our analyses of these minerals provide constraints on heat sources in the comet-forming region, aqueous activity on cometary bodies, and the extent and mechanisms of radial mixing of material in the early nebula. The sulfides in the Wild 2 collection are most likely the products of low-temperature aqueous alteration. They provide evidence of radial mixing of material from the inner solar system to the comet-forming region and possible secondary aqueous processing on the cometary body.

ABSTRACT:
The Archean North China Craton was characterized by a thick (>180 km), cold (40 mW/m2), refractory lithospheric keel from its final cratonization of 1850 Ma to the Paleozoic. In the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, the cratonic lithosphere dramatically changed to a thin (<80 km), hot (>64 mW/m2) and fertile “oceanic” lithosphere beneath the eastern block, while the western block still preserved the continental root. An integration of recent studies of petrology, geochemistry and geophysics will provide new clues to understand the timing and mechanisms of destruction of the North China Craton.
